Andrew J Brooks
Electronic artist Brooks came to the attention of electronic music fans with early releases on Mantis Recordings and legendary UK House Sound System DiY. His debut album, You Me & Us, blended latent Chicago House and Detroit Techno influences with twisted pop melodies and sinister lyrical narratives, Second album, Red Tape, was on Matthew Herbert’s Soundslike Records, finding inspiration in Weimar cabaret and industrial machinery. As a DJ, he has played the opening night of the legendary Berghain Berlin, Fabric, London; Sonar Festival, Barcelona and Festival No. 6, Portemeirion. His collaboration with Anohni (formerly Antony Hegarty, of Anthony and the Johnsons), A Little Bit Of Time, is a sought-after disco spell that subverts nocturnal dancefloor cliches. Double EP Ecstasy/Paradise (2017) mines expanded, clubland consciousness and spiritual real estate in the pursuit of escapism. His present focus is the use of buildings and architectural space as a conduit for recontextualising found sound.
“Andy was a bit nervous and shuffly… he was wearing clothes from a jumble sale and his hair wasn’t washed.’” - Paul Flynn, BUTT magazine, Oct 2004
